BIOGRAPHY

  • Professor Tuğrul Özel is Full Professor with tenure in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Director of Manufacturing & Automation Research Laboratory (MARLAB) at Rutgers University. Prof. received a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1998 and worked a summer faculty fellow at NASA Glenn Research Center in 1999.

  • Professor Özel has been a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher advising and mentoring students at all levels.  He teaches courses on manufacturing processes, advanced manufacturing, automation, computer integrated manufacturing, computer control of systems, production planning and control and simulation modeling at Rutgers. He has been the faculty advisor to Society of Manufacturing Engineers student chapter at Rutgers since 2003. He has advised and mentored 12 Ph.D. students, 18 Masters' students, 14 undergraduate research and Aresty research students, 20 visiting doctoral/masters' students, post-doctoral trainees, and visiting professors, and hundreds of Industrial Engineering undergraduate students at Rutgers.

  • Professor Özel's research interests include advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, automation, laser processing, machine learning, medical device design and prototyping, micro-manufacturing, precision machining, predictive process modeling, process simulations, and process optimization. His research program mainly focuses on innovation in manufacturing processes, computational modeling and physics-based simulation, and optimization of manufacturing processes (e.g.  precision machining, micro-milling, laser micro-machining, laser material processing, additive selective laser melting/sintering, biomanufacturing processes). His research has been well funded (over $1 million as single or sole PI) by National Science Foundation (4 awards), DoC National Institute of Standards and Technology, Taiho Kogyo Tribology Research Foundation, NASA Space Grant Consortium, and industrial companies such as United Technologies and 3M Company.

  • Professor Özel  has an outstanding publication record. He published over 175 research articles in leading research journals and peer-reviewed proceedings in the fields of industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, material science, mechanical engineering,  production engineering, and systems engineering. His articles received numerous recognitions from international journals for achieving high citations and downloads. He is also co-author of four edited books; Modern Manufacturing Processes, Wiley- 2019, Biomedical Device Design, Prototyping, and Manufacturing, Wiley- 2016; Micro-Manufacturing: Design and Manufacturing of Micro-Products, Wiley- 2011; and  Intelligent Machining, ISTE-Wiley -2009.

  • Professor Özel 's scholarship has been very well received by the research community. His publications have received outstanding number of citations in renowned databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar.  He is listed among the best scholars in his field in Google Scholar.

  • Professor Özel has been very active with an outstanding service record. He is the Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems  since 2008,  the Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering  since 2018 , and has served as member on the Editorial Board of eight other international journals including International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture (since 2013), Production Engineering: Research and Development (since 2013), International Journal of Manufacturing Research (since 2013), International Journal of Machining & Machinability of Materials (since 2006),  International Journal of Manufacturing Engineering (2012-2017), and International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Surface Engineering (2009-2017). He has also served as Guest Editor to several renown international journals. He has been a member of scientific or program committee over 50 international conferences. Professor Özel is a senior member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, North American Manufacturing Research Institute, and an elected former associate member of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering. Professor Özel is the first elected member to the CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering from Rutgers. He  is also repeatedly listed in The Marquis Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders.

*The h-index is an index that measures both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scholar. The index is based on the set of the scholar's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications.
