2018

  • Prof. Özel has been appointed as Associate Editor to ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering (2018-2021).
  • MARL Group M.S. Candidate Animek Shaurya has successfully defended his M.S. Thesis in April 2018. His thesis is titled "Process Monitoring for Temporal-Spatial Modeling of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) Based Metal Additive Manufacturing".

  • Prof. Özel gave an Invited Presentation titled "Constitutive Material Model Determination for Finite Element Simulations and Micro-Machining Modeling and Optimization,” at 3M Center Technology Forum on March 24, 2017 in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. 
  • Prof. Özel and PhD student Alaa Olleak will give a paper presentation titled "3D Finite Element Modeling Based Investigations of Micro-Textured Tool Designs in Machining Titanium Alloy Ti-6Al-4V,” at the 45th North American Manufacturing Research Conference that will be held in June 4-8, 2017 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

  • MARL Group Ph.D. Candidate Luis Criales  has successfully defended his Ph.D. Dissertation in February 2016.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Luis Criales! His dissertation is titled "Predictive Modeling, Simulation and Optimization of Laser Processing Techniques: UV Nano-second Pulsed Laser Micro-Machining of Ploymers and Selective Laser Melting of Powder Metals" and accepted a position as Senior 3D Printing Engineer, Engineering Division at Baxter Healthcare in Chicago, Illinois.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to the Scientific Committee of The 13th International Conference on High Speed Machining (HSM 2016) take will take place in Metz, France, October 4-5, 2016.

  • Prof. Özel has given two technical presentations in CIRP Scientific Technical Committee Meetings in Paris, France, February 17-19, 2016.

  • MARL Group Ph.D. Candidate Yigit Arisoy has successfully defended his Ph.D. Dissertation in January 2016. Congratulations to Dr. Yigit  Arisoy! His dissertation is titled "Physics-Based Simulation Modeling and Optimization of Microstructural Changes Induced by Machining and Selective Laser Melting Processes in Titanium and Nickel Based Alloys" and he has accepted a position as Senior Data Researcher at Manhattan Associates in Atlanta, Georgia.

2015

  • MARL Group Alumnus Dr. Durul Ulutan becomes Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Bucknell University  in August 2015. Congratulations to Professor Ulutan.

  • Prof. Özel has given a keynote paper presentation in The 63rd CIRP General Assembly on August 19th, 2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The keynote paper was co-authored with P. Arrazola, T. Ozel, D. Umbrello, M. Davies, and I.S. Jawahir.
    CIRP is the world leading organization in production engineering research and is at the forefront of design, optimization, control and management of processes, machines and systems. The Academy has restricted membership based on demonstrated excellence in research and has some 600 academic and industrial members from 50 industrialized countries.
    Prof. Özel is the only elected CIRP member from Rutgers University.

  • Prof. Özel has joined the Editorial Board of the Production Engineering: Research and Development.

  • Prof. Özel has joined the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture.

  • Prof. Özel has joined the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Manufacturing Engineering.

  • Durul Ulutan successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on December 5, 2012 and completed his Ph.D. degree in January 2013 . He continues to his journey as a post-doctoral research fellow at Clemson University (CU-ICAR). Congratulations to Durul !

  • Prof. Özel's Article Ranked #1 in Top 25 Hottest Articles in Engineering- Int. J. Machine Tools & Manufacture.

  • Prof. Özel's Article Ranked #2 in Top 25 Hottest Articles in Engineering- Int. J. Mechanical Sciences.
    Prof. Özel's article co-authored with his collaborator Prof. P.J. Arrazola entitled "Investigations on the effects of friction modeling in finite element simulation of machining " was ranked #2 in the list of 25 Hottest Articles of October 2009 - September 2010 Academic Year.   • Prof. Özel has been appointed to serve on the NAMRI/SME Scientific Committee for the 2012-2014 term (a three-year term).

2011

  • Prof. Özel receives another grant award in the amount of $130,000 from National Science Foundation.
    The grant award is entitled "EAGER: Pulsed Laser Assisted Exfoliation of Single Crystalline SiC Thin Layers for Cost Effective Micro-Device Fabrication".

  • Prof. Özel receives a grant award in the amount of $388,345 from National Science Foundation.
    The grant award is entitled "Predictive Modeling and Optimization of Machining Induced Surface Integrity with Applications in Titanium and Nickel-Based Alloyed End Products."

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to the Scientific Committee of The Fifth CIRP Conference on High Performance Cutting that will be held on June 4-7, 2012 in Zurich, Switzerland.

  • Prof. Özel hosted the Second Annual Meetings for the IREBID project titled "Biomedical Devices Design, Prototyping and Manufacturing".
    The IREBID project is
    an European Commission-Marie Curie grants funded program. The meetings were held in Rutgers Busch campus – CoRE Building on July 11-29, 2011.

  • Prof. Özel is organizing together with European and North & South American partners The First International Conference on Design and PROcesses for MEdical Devices (PROMED 2012) in Brescia - Italy on May 2-4, 2012.
    This conference aims to bring together researchers around the world from engineering, science and medical fields for stimulating meetings and discussions about advanced manufacturing, medical devices, design, development, and biomaterials.

  • Prof. Özel publishes a new edited book titled "Micro-Manufacturing: Design and Manufacturing of Micro-Products". 
    The book is co-edited by M. Koc and
    Prof. Özel has been published. (ISBN: 978-0-470-55644-3 Wiley, Hardcover 404 pages, 2011).

  • Prof. Özel  chaired a session on "Machining" and gave two presentations at The 39th North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) on June 14-15, 2011 in Corvallis, Oregon.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to the Scientific Committee of The Ninth International Conference on High Speed Machining, that will be held on March 7-8, 2012 in San Sebastian, Spain.

  • Prof. Özel  chaired a session on "Surface Integrity" and gave a presentation at The 13th CIRP International Workshop on Modeling of Machining Operations on May 12, 2011 in Sintra, Portugal.

  • Mr. Mohamed Amin who is supported by the NSF REU Program has joined the MARL group as summer student on April 15, 2011.

  • Mr. Harkaitz Urreta, Microtechnology and Ultraprecision Manager from IDEKO IK4 Technological Center in Spain visited Rutgers MARL and gave a presentation on April 8, 2011.

  • Mr. Simone Farina has defended his Master's Thesis titled “Micro End Milling of Ti-6Al-4V: Forces and Tool’s Deflections Analysis" on March 15, 2011 at the Dept. of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering in University of Brescia (Universitŕ degli Studi di Brescia). He was co-advised together with Prof. Elisabetta Ceretti.

  • Prof. Özel visited GREP, University of Girona, Catalonia, Spain on March 14 to 18, 2011 and gave invited lectures on "Product and Process Engineering" and "Innovative Manufacturing Technologies". Prof. Özel also visited laboratories of the GREP group and conducted meetings related to IREBID project.

  • Dr. Daniel Attinger of Columbia University visited Rutgers MARL and gave a seminar on "Microfluidic Engineering of Solid-Liquid Interfaces" on February 01, 2011.

  • Prof. Özel has given an invited presentation at The CIRP STC-C meetings in Paris, France on January 27, 2011.

  • Prof. Özel attended the 2011 NSF-CMMI Research and Innovation Conference in Atlanta, GA on January 4 to 7, 2011. Prof. Özel together with his students and project collaborators had a conference paper and poster presentation about their recent research on "Physics-based simulation of machining titanium alloys" funded by NSF.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to the Scientific Committee of The 1st CIRP Conference on Surface Integrity (CSI), that will be held on January 30- February 1, 2012 in Bremen, Germany.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to the Scientific Committee of The Fifth International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP 2011), that will be held on September 28-October 1, 2011 in Leiria, Portugal.

2010

  • Prof. Özel  has received  Most Cited Articles 2005 to 2010 award from Elsevier for his article published in the J. of Materials Processing Technology in 2007.

  • Prof. Özel has presented a paper on "Investigations on the Effects of Multi-Layered Coated Inserts in Machining Ti-6Al-4V Alloy with Experiments and Finite Element Simulations" at The CIRP General Assembly in Pisa, Italy, on August 24, 2010. The paper has appear in the Annals of the CIRP.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to the International Advisory Board, International Conference on Computational Methods in Manufacturing (ICCMM 2011), that will be held on December 15-16, 2011 at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in Guwahati, India.

  • Prof. Özel gave a series of lectures between June 28-July2, 2010 during the kick-off meetings of collaborative project IREBID International Research Exchange For Biomedical Devices Design, Prototyping and Manufacturing in Girona, Spain.

  • Prof. Joaquim Ciurana at University of Girona, Spain has been awarded a visiting professor grant that will fund  Prof. Özel to travel to Spain in June-July 2010 to work on collaborative research project IREBID International Research Exchange For Biomedical Devices Design, Prototyping and Manufacturing.

  • Prof. Özel  has received NSF fellowship to participate in Summer Workshop on "Principles of and Advances in Laser Micro/Nano Manufacturing Processes" at Northwestern University, Illinois in June 1-4, 2010.

  • Prof. Özel and his research team presented a paper on "Sensor-Assisted Monitoring and Optimization of Process Parameters in Micro-end Milling of Ti-6Al- 4V Titanium Alloy," at The Fifth International Conference on Micromanufacturing (ICOMM/4M 2010), April 5-8, 2010 Madison, Wisconsin,  USA..

  • Prof. Özel and his research team presented a paper on "Finite Element Simulation of High Speed Machining Ti-6Al-4V Alloy using Modified Material Models," at The Thirty-eighth North American Manufacturing Research Conference, May 25-28, 2010,  Queen's University, Kingston, Canada.

  • Prof. Özel  has been invited to The International Program Committee of the 6th International Conference and Exhibition on Design and Production of Machines and Dies/Molds, that will be held in June 23-26, 2011, Ankara, Turkey.

  • Prof. Özel  has been invited to the Scientific Committee of The 13th CIRP Conference on Modeling of Machining Operations that will be held in May 12-13, 2011, Sintra, Portugal.

  • Prof. Özel becomes Associate Member of the CIRP (International Academy for Production Engineering). He is elected to the Academy for his work on computational and physics-based simulation modeling of machining processes. CIRP is the world leading organization in production engineering research and is at the forefront of design, optimization, control and management of processes, machines and systems. The Academy has restricted membership based on demonstrated excellence in research and has some 550 academic and industrial members from 40 industrialized countries.

  • Our research articles published in the Int. J. of Machine Tools and Manufacture have been ranked #1 and #3 on the Top10 Cited articles in the past five years (2005-2009).

2009

  • Prof. Özel and his research team presented two papers on "Sustainable Manufacturing" and "Finite Element Modeling of Nickel Alloy Machining" at the 2009 ASME Manufacturing Science & Engineering Conference (MSEC), October 5-7, 2009, Lafayette, Indiana.

  • Rutgers-MARL is participating in a new three-year research project on International Research Exchange For Biomedical Devices Design, Prototyping and Manufacturing  from  European Commission Research Directorate-General, FP7-PEOPLE-2009-IRSES program together with partners: Lead-PI: J. Ciurana- Univ. Girona (Spain), co-PIs: E. Ceretti- Univ. Bresca (Italy), P. Bartolo- Polytech. Inst. Leiria (Portugal), C. Rodriguez- Tech Monterrey (Mexico), J.V. Lopes De Silva CTIR (Brazil), 2009-2012.

  • Prof. Özel has participated to the CIRP General Assembly Meetings in Boston, MA in August 23-26, 2009. 

  • Summer students, Joshua Greenhaus and Joel Lora, who are supported by the NSF REU Program joined the MARL group on June 8, 2009.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to serve on the organizing committee of the 2010 International Conference on MicroManufacturing, that will be held in April 5-9, 2009 in Wisconsin, Madison.

  • Prof. Özel has presented two papers and chaired a session in the 12th CIRP Conference on Modeling of Machining Operations in San Sebastian, Spain on May 7th, 2009.

  • Prof. Özel has given an invited seminar on "Computational Manufacturing: Modeling and Optimization of Micro-machining Processes" at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) on May 6th, 2009, Madrid, Spain.

  • Prof. Özel has published a book on Intelligent Machining edited together with J.P. Davim. The book is available through Wiley in July 2009.

  • Prof. Özel has participated to the CIRP January Meetings in Paris, France on January 28-30, 2009.

  • Prof. Özel has given a series of invited lectures on "Innovative Manufacturing Processes and Production Systems" in University of Girona, Catalonia, Spain in January 20-23, 2009 and visited  the GR3P group directed by Prof. Joaquim De Ciurana in University of Girona.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to serve on the organizing committee of the 4M2009 International Conference on Multi-Material MicroManufacturing, that will be held in September 23-25, 2009 in Forschungszentrum Karlsrhue, Germany.

  • Prof. Özel has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Surface Engineering (IJCMSSE) in January 2009.

2008

  • Prof. Özel  has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure effective July 1, 2008.

  • Prof. Özel gave an invited plenary lecture on "Computational Modeling of Machining Processes" at the  4th International Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and Welding Technology Congress and Meeting, on November 6th, 2008, Saltillo, Mexico.

  • Prof. Özel gave a presentation on "Hard Turning with Variable Micro-Geometry PcBN Tools" at the CIRP General Assembly that will be held in Manchester, U.K., in August 26, 2008. 

  • Prof. Özel has received The 2008 Machine Tool Equipment Loan Award from MTTRF in July 1, 2008 in San Francisco, California.

  • Prof. Özel  has been invited to the Scientific Committee of the 12th CIRP Conference on Modeling of Machining Operations that will be held in May 7-8, 2009, San Sebastian, Spain.

  • Prof. Özel  has been invited to the International Program Committee of the 5th International Conference and Exhibition on Design and Production of Machines and Dies/Molds that will be held June 18-21, 2009, Kusadasi, Turkey. 

  • Prof. Özel gave an invited lecture on "Surface Engineering for Medical Products: Friction, Coatings and Biocompatibility Issues", organized by Society of Manufacturing Engineers for the ISPE New Jersey Chapter Day, June 18, 2008, Somerset, New Jersey. 

  • Prof. Özel has presented a paper on micro-milling process planning for micro-mold manufacturing at the  3rd CIRP Int. Conference on High Speed Cutting, Dublin, Ireland, June 12-13, 2008.

  • Prof. Joaquim De Ciurana from University of Girona will be at MARL as visiting professor between April and August of 2008.

  • Prof. Özel  has been awarded a prestigious grant from the National Science Foundation. This research award of $186,039 will support a collaborative research project entitled "Improving Machinability of Titanium Alloys using Physics-based Simulation Modeling".

  • Our research paper entitled “Analytical and Thermal Modeling of High-Speed Machining with Chamfered Tools,” that appeared in ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, Vol. 130, Issue 1, February 2008 is ranked #1 in the the Top 10 Most Downloaded Articles  in the months Dec2007-Jan2008.

  • Prof. Özel has been invited to serve on the organizing committee of the 3rd International Conference on MicroManufacturing (ICOMM'08), that will be held in September 9-11, 2008 in Carnegie-Mellon University.

  • Prof. Özel has given a series of invited lectures on "Innovative Manufacturing Processes and Production Systems" in University of Girona, Catalonia, Spain in January 17-18, 2008. Prof. Özel also visited the newly established techno-park and advanced manufacturing laboratories of the GREP group directed by Prof. Joaquim De Ciurana in University of Girona and discussed collaboration between MARL@Rutgers and GREP@ Girona.
