MARLAB offers renown expertise on advanced manufacturing research & manufacturing automation gained over 20+ years at the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, Rutgers University. MARLAB conducts research on establishing predicitive models for advanced manufacturing processes using physics-based computational/numerical and physics-informed machine learning approaches validated with experimental measurements. MARLAB's research also involves creating model-based process automation systems, smart process monitoring and control systems, and multi-criteria decision support and optimization systems using sensory data, experiments, machine learning, deep learning, and evolutionary computational algorithms.

Graduate Assistantship Opportunity: Applications are welcome from highly qualified students for graduate studies leading to Ph.D. degrees in Industrial & Systems Engineering with a research focus on Advanced Manufacturing, Manufacturing Automation, Additive Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Digital Twin, Surrogate Modeling and Multi-Criteria Decision Making beginning with Fall 2024. The graduate assistant apointment can be in the form of teaching assistant and/or research assistant. The candidates should have strong academic records, excellent skills in reading, writing, and speaking of English language and be highly motivated individuals with great enthusiasm for learning, discovering, innovating, and disseminating in a laboratory environment. A strong engineering background in industrial engineerig, manufacturing and data science, computational modeling, machine learning, experimental design, physics based modeling is required. Programming skills using MATLAB, Phyton, or other languages are also a must. Some candidate must have laboratory experience using lasers, equipment, machine tools, surface metrology and material characterization tools and some candiates must have experience in numerial modeling, computational programming, and simulation modeling.     News- Fall 2023: Professor Özel presented MARLAB research at the ASTM's Internationational Conference on Advanced Manufacturing- ICAM2023. The presentations were given on "Physics-Informed Digital Twin Framework for Microstructure Tailoring in Laser Powder Bed Fusion" October 31, 2023 and "Physics-Informed Deep Learning of Meltpool Conditions in Laser Powder Bed Fusion" November 2, 2023 in Washington, DC, USA.

    New Journal Special Issue (September 2023): Professor Özel organized a journal special issue for the International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems. The special issue titled "Progress in Smart Manufacturing" has been published and can be seen in the following link.

    News- Fall 2023: ISE Course on Advanced Manufacturing Processes: Professor Özel has offered a graduate level course at Rutgers University Industrial and Systems Engineering in Fall 2023. The course is titled "16:540:573 Advanced Manufacturing Processes" and it is also offered as part of Master of Science degree in Manufacturing & Production Engineering . It covers working principles of modern manufacturing processes such as laser materials processing, laser micromachining, laser exfoliation of semiconductor materials, fusion-based additive manufacturing (AM), laser powder bed fusion, material extrusion and directed energy deposition based AM processes, and biomanufacturing, The overarching approach is to learn how to model these processes using experimental and physics-based numerical methods as well as machine learning and deep process learning for optimizing the selection of process parameters and minimizing defects and maximizing quality, and productitivity. Experimental design, regression models, single and multi-objective optimization methods using genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence and bayesian optimization are shown with in-class exercises.

    News- Spring 2023: ISE Course on Automation & AI Manufacturing: Professor Özel has offered a graduate level course at Rutgers University Industrial and Systems Engineering in Spring 2023. The course is titled "16:540:586 Automation and Computer Integrated/ Artificial Intelligence Enabled Manufacturing" and it is also offered as part of Master of Science degree in Manufacturing & Production Engineering . It covers principles of modern manufacturing automation, industrial control systems, data acquisition systems, programmable logic controllers and emerging applications of artificial intelligence, deep learning with machine learning, and reinforcement learning and decision tools in automated manufacturing, assembly automation, industrial robotics, machine vision, augmented reality, digital twin and Industry 4.0/5.0. .

    • Digital twin development in additive manufacturing: Prof. Özel has given an invited seminar titled "Digital twin development for additive manufacturing technologies" at University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) in Lugano, Ticino, Switzerland on August 25, 2023. He was hosted by hosts Prof.Federico Bosi and Prof. Maurizio C. Barbato. Prof. Özel also discussed showcased research projects with SUPSI professors and researchers on the topics of additive manufacturing, laser processing and surface texturing, robotics cells for human-robot collaboration, mobile robotics for AM, smart production and assembly systems for Industry 4.0/5.0, materials manufacturing for industrial projects, polymer processing and nanotechnology for sustainable production and sustainability, and thermal systems for energy storage.
    • Digital twin in additive manufacturing: Prof. Özel has given an invited seminar titled "Process monitoring and modeling techniques for quality prediction and digital twin expansion in metal additive manufacturing" at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina on January 20, 2023. His Keynote Talk was titled "Digital twin development for simulation of machining and metal additive manufacturing processes. Prof. Özel also chaired a session titled "Additive Manufacturing" on November 17, 2021.

    • Prof. Özel was the Keynote Speaker at the CIRP General Assembly on August 23, 2021 in Munich, Germany. The keynote paper was titled "Structured and Textured Cutting Tool Surfaces for Machining Applications" and co-authored with Prof. Biermann (Technische Universit t, Dortmund, Germany), Prof. Enomoto (Osaka University, Japan), and Prof. Mativenga (University of Manchester,  United Kingdom). The paper has been published in the CIRP Annals, Vol.  70, Issue 2, 2021, Pages 495-518. CIRP, The International Academy for Production Engineering, was founded in 1951 to promote, by scientific research, the development of all aspects of manufacturing technology covering the optimization, control and management of processes, machines and systems.
    • Prof. Özel offers a graduate level course titled "16:540:586 Automation and Artificial Intelligence Enabled Manufacturing" in Spring 2022. The course material covers modern and emerging applications of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning tools in production and manufacturing technology such as automation systems, robotics, assembly systems, machine vision, augmented reality tools, Industry 4.0 examples and automated machines, actuators, sensors, robotics, PLCs, and 5G wireless networks. The course will be supported by the state-of-the-art modern technology such as 3D printers, conversational CNC machine tools, and laser systems available in the Department laboratories.
