IGERT: Integrative Science and Engineering of Stem Cells

Rutgers is proud to host one of the first NSF funded PhD training programs in the U.S. on stem cells. Effective September 1, 2008, the IGERT on Integrated Science and Engineering of Stem Cells (ISESC) builds on the legacy of the prior IGERT on biointerfaces. The ISESC will offer cross-cutting thrusts for Ph.D. research, together with a new multidisciplinary graduate curriculum, combining stem cell biology with research in biomaterials, process engineering, and computational modeling.

IGERT: Rutgers Integrative Graduate Education and Research Program in NanoPharmaceuticals Engineering and Science

A multidisciplinary team of engineers, pharmacists, food scientists, and chemists from Rutgers University (lead institution), NJIT, and UPR-Mayaguez has joined forces to develop a graduate training program focusing on the application of nanotechnology for the design and optimization of pharmaceutical products. in the innovative interdisciplinary area of Nanopharmaceutical Science and Engineering.

Catalyst Manufacturing Center

The Catalyst Manufacturing Science and Engineering Center was founded in 2003. Catalyst manufacturing processes are often designed relying on empiricism, leading to uncertain/sub-optimal processes, decreased quality, and increased cost. By combining the substantial level of expertise in particle technology, optimization, multi-scale simulation, catalysis and molecular modeling available at Rutgers, we develop and promote science-based methods for designing and optimizing catalyst manufacturing methods and processes such as impregnation, drying, slurry mixing, extrusion, calcination, etc.

Biotecnology Training Program

The PhD Training Program in Biotechnology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ (UMDNJ) was established in 1989. It is one of the select group of such programs throughout the country funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The 2008-09 year marks the 19th year of NIH funding.

The aim of the program is to train a new breed of creative investigators who are able to translate basic science discoveries into technology developments for the needs of society, government, and industry. Students in the program; (1) become well educated within a single biotechnology-related discipline (e.g. biochemistry, chemical engineering, molecular biology), and (2) become fluent in the language, approaches and principles of the biological and physical sciences, in general.

Pharmaceutical Enginneering

New Jersey is home to a large number of global pharmaceutical and medicinal manufacturing companies and Rutgers University is located at the national epicenter of pharmaceutical research and development. The pharmaceutical industry is increasingly looking for engineers and pharmaceutical scientists with advanced training in pharmaceutical engineering. Rutgers' provides an intellectual climate for the preparation of individuals for professional advancement and will train engineers and scientists with the requisite skills to work in the rapidly evolving regulatory framework that determines pharmaceutical product design and manufacturing processes.

ERC (Engineering Research Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems)

The Engineering Research Center for Structure Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS) brings together a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists, as well as industry leaders, to improve the way pharmaceuticals, foods and agricultural products are manufactured. C-SOPS will focus on advancing the scientific foundation for the optimal design of SOPS with advanced functionality while developing the methodologies for their active control and manufacturing. Joining Rutgers University in the Center are Purdue University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, schools with established teaching and research programs in engineering, pharmaceutical sciences and technology.
