Welcome to Chemical and Biochemical Engineering

Our department has been involved in chemical engineering education and research since the early 1960s. We currently provide instruction and training to over 150 undergraduate and over 50 graduate students. To meet the challenges of the new century, our department is working to constantly improve its educational and research program. We combine an innovative educational experience with many opportunities for practical training and connections to local industry and professional societies.

The department has a dynamic and active faculty of 15 doing cutting-edge research in all areas of chemical engineering, including biotechnology/biomolecular engineering, nano-pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical engineering, energy, and process systems. The program is host to an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center for Structure Organic Particulate Systems, an NIH-sponsored Biotechnology Training Program, and two NSF-funded IGERT graduate fellowship programs in Stem Cell Research and Nano-Pharmaceutics.

We invite you to explore our site to get information about our faculty, staff, and students. You can learn more about the research and educational activities in our exciting undergraduate and graduate degree programs, to view our latest news and see who is visiting in the upcoming semesters and find events hosted by our department.

Cordially,
Henrik Pedersen

The President of Rutgers awarded the 2009 Scholar-Teacher Award to Prof. Ben Glasser for his "innovative interdisciplinary research in particle technology applied to pharmaceutical and chemical processes, his development of innovative courses that transcend traditional disciplinary barriers and encourage exploration of new areas of research, and his deep commitment to the academic and professional development of all students."

U.S. Department of Education Awards $698 Grant

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a three-year Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN)grant to Rutgers University to train and support doctoral students in pharmaceutical engineering. This $698K grant provides fellowship support for doctoral students, and equips experts in the area of pharmaceutical engineering. Professor Yee Chiew(PI), along with Profs Alex Neimark and Nina Shapley (co-PI's), direct this program.

Prof. Androulakis wins NIH research award

Prof. Androulakis, in collaboration with Professors Lowry and Calvano (Dept. of Surgery, UMDNJ), received a $132K one year award from the NIH to further advance their collaboration towards the development of a multi-scale model of human inflammation.

Alex Neimark wins ARO grant award.

Professor Alex Neimark received a new grant award of $450,000 from the Army Research Office for the three year research project “Molecular Design and Characterization of Novel Nanoporous Adsorbents with Increased Removal Capacity”.

Professor Charles Roth has been awarded a two-year R01 grant from the NIH for his project "Efficient Cellular Delivery of ligonucleotides".
This $687,000 grant was made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and will support mechanistic studies and
