NIS client commands

  • To verify the NIS client (ypbind) is running:
    
    ps -ef | grep yp
    
      root 3598 1 0 Feb21 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/ypbind

  • Alternatively, it can be checked through rpcinfo command:
    
    rpcinfo -p | grep yp
    
      100007 2 udp 808 ypbind 100007 1 udp 808 ypbind 100007 2 tcp 811 ypbind 100007 1 tcp 811 ypbind
  • To see if a client can access the NIS services on the NIS server, for example node18, run rpcinfo on the client host:
    
    rpcinfo -p node18 | grep yp
    

  • To start NIS services at boot-up time, run
    
    update-rc.d portmap defaults
    update-rc.d nis defaults
    

  • To check the server name the client is bound to:
    
    ypwhich
    

  • To check on available NIS maps:
     
    ypcat -x
    

  • A user or uid entry quiry in the password map:
    
    ypmatch mike passwd.byname
    ypmatch 3112 passwd.byuid
    

  • To query the whole password map:
     
    ypcat passwd
    

  • To check the NIS domain name:
    
    domainname
    

  • To change NIS password:
    
    yppasswd
