Graduation Check-List

Minimum Scholastic Requirements: The degree of Bachelor of Science from the School of Engineering is not awarded to any candidate whose university cumulative grade-point average is less than 2.000 or whose cumulative grade-point average in the major is less than 2.000.

It is the student’s responsibility to know what requirements s/he must fulfill for the School of Engineering and for the specific engineering major. This includes humanities/social science electives, tech electives, departmental electives, required courses, etc. For example, if a student fails a course that is part of the requirements for graduation, the student must accept the responsibility to retake the course. Example two, if a student decides not to take Expository writing in his/her first, second, third, fourth years, s/he must know that it has to be taken in order to graduate.

Students can find out their requirements by looking in the Undergraduate Handbook for their major (often called a curriculum or a check-off sheet). A copy of your curriculum/check-off sheet is kept in B100. Students may view it by stopping into B100 and requesting a copy. If you have ANY questions or find ANY discrepancies in your evaluation of remaining graduation requirements, please contact Dean Prendergast immediately.

There are three possible times to complete your degree requirements at Rutgers School of Engineering:
Students who complete their degree requirements at the end of the spring semester have a May graduation date. Students who have any grades or transcripts submitted after June 15th will NOT be processed as a May graduate (except for students on co-op or studey abroad in the final semester).
Students who complete their degree requirements at the end of the fall semester have a January graduation date.
Students who complete their degree requirements at the end of the summer session have an October graduation date.

There is only one Graduation Ceremony each year, at the end of the spring semester in May. Only students who have completed all of their degree requirements may participate in the graduation ceremony; Special permission may be granted. Permission to March applications will be available after Spring break. See Dean Prendergast for details (Engineering Building B-100 or lprend@rci.rutgers.edu). Students who have any grades or transcripts submitted after June 15th will NOT be processed as a May graduate (except for students on co-op or studey abroad in the final semester).

Students who complete their degree requirements in October or January will receive certification of completion of their requirements. Their diploma will normally be available at the graduation ceremony in May. If you will not participate in the graduation ceremony and would like to pick up your diploma or have it mailed, please contact the Registrar for more information:

Taking undergraduate courses after graduation
Some students wish to continue to take undergraduate courses after they have graduated for a number of reasons. Those who wish to obtain a second Engineering degree may be readmitted into the School of Engineering in order to complete the second degree, see Dean Bernath for more details.
If a student wishes to just take some courses in order to fulfill medical school requirements, to complete a minor or second major, the student is to get registered as a non-matriculated (non-degree seeking) student. As a non-matriculated student, the grades received are NOT factored into the gpa.
