Raising the GPA
Students are allowed to take courses outside of the Engineering curriculum. These courses are not part of the degree requirements but will be included in the overall GPA calculation. Certain students may do this in attempts to raise their overall GPA.

Students may take a course that they have not taken before.
Students may not retake courses that in which they received a C or better.
Students may also not take courses if they have already taken an equivalent course (with grade of C or better).
For example, if the student has taken 220:200, s/he may not then take 220:102 or 220:103.
Students may not go backwards in a sequential set of courses. For example, a student has completed Calc 4 and wants to retake Calc 1 or 2.

Grades of D
Students often ask if a grade of D is passing or not. A grade of D IS normally considered passing. You do not have to retake a course in which you received a D, but you can if you want to. If you take a course on a Pass/Nocredit basis (see below), a grade of D is NOT passing. Also, if you get a D (in an eligible course), you may choose to retake it and apply for Grade Replacement (aka Repeated Course/E-credit - see below). There is no max/min # of times you can get a D. But, if your semester gpa, overall gpa, or major gpa drop below a 2.0, you will be put on Probation (at the very minimum). Also, a student cannot graduate with a cumulative gpa or major gpa below 2.0.

If you get a D in a major course (major courses are not eligible for Pass/Nocr nor for Grade Replacement), you can choose to retake the course if you wish. The D stays on the transcript and in the gpa and so does the new grade. If you get a C in any course, you are not allowed to retake it. If you attempt to do this, the new grade will be removed from the gpa and credit totals.

Pass/Fail Courses
Pass/Fail or Pass/No Credit - An engineering student may take one elective course (not exceeding 4 credits) on a Pass/Nocr basis in any two terms of the curriculum. The last day to submit an application for P/NC is the last day to drop a course with Dean’s Permission (end of the 12th week). This is NOT reversible. For courses taken during Summer Session, the application must be submitted by the end of the first week of classes.

Starting in the fall semester of senior year, students can apply for Pass/Nocr for previous semesters if they have not used their allocation of 2 P/NC courses for their entire undergraduate careers. The deadline for submitting an application for P/NC is the last day to drop a class with Dean's permission (end of the 12th week).

Students taking a course for Pass/NoCr must take all quizzes and examinations and are subject to attendance requirements. Grades of A, B, and C correspond to Pass, and D and F correspond to No Credit.

Pass/Nocr applies only to humanities/social science electives, general electives, and technical electives (not School 14 courses). If you take a school 14 course as a technical elective, you may NOT make it a Pass/Nocr course. INeligible courses: school 14 courses, major courses, required courses (ie. Calc 1-4, Chem 1 and 2, Physics, etc).

For those students pursuing a minor, you should be aware that certain departments do not honor Pass/Nocr courses for a minor. For example, the Economics Dept will not accept a Pass/Nocr course towards the fulfillment of an Econ minor.

The student must fill out a Pass/Nocredit Form and hand it in to the Office of Academic Affairs in (B100).

E-Credit, Repeated Courses, Grade Replacement: A grade of D or F received in 14:440:125, 14:440:127, 14:440:221, 14:440:222, or any NON school 14 course (like math, physics, chemistry, humanities electives, etc) may be "E-credited" by retaking the class AT Rutgers. This means that the original grade (D or F) will not count in any GPA calculation. You will however still see both courses and the grades denoted on the transcript. If you choose to retake the course outside of RU, the course is not eligible for this option. This may be done with up to 4 courses. Note: if a non school 14 course was approved as a substitute for a school 14 course, that course is INeligible for e-credit/grade replacement.

However, if you have taken Calculus I or II and received a D grade, and you want to re-take it for E-credit, you must re-take the course before Calc II or III (respectively). If you received a D in Calculus I, and then went on to take Calc II or higher, you cannot then go back and retake Calc I for grade replacement. Similarly, if you have received a D in Statics, you must retake it prior to completing 2 courses that have Statics as a pre-req. If you have completed Dynamics-440:222 and Mechanics of Solids/Materials-180:243/650:291, then you should NOT retake Statics. Again, if you have received a D in Physics 1a or 1b (750:123/115 or 750:124/116) and have gone on to take 750:227 and Statics, you should NOT retake Physics 1a or 1b.

To summarize, If a student wants to re-take a first year math/science/eng'g course for E-credit, it must be re-taken at RU within 2 semesters.

Once the course has been taken and completed the second time (meaning the grade is posted), the student fills out the
Repeated Coruses/E-Credit Form and presents it to the Office of Academic Affairs (B100).

Calculating the GPA
Each Grade corresponds to a point value.
A4
B+3.5
B3
C+2.5
C2
D1
F0

List your courses with grades credits, and points.
Multiply the Grade/point value by the number of credits.
Do this for all courses and add these numbers together.
Finally, divide this result by the total number of credits. This is your GPA.
Example:

 GradePoint ValueCreditsPoints x Credit
PhysicsB339.0
Physics labC+2.512.5
CalculusA4416.0
ChemistryC236.0
ExposB+3.5310.5
------
Total:1444

GPA = 44/14 = 3.14

Major Average vs Cumulative Average
Cumulative average is calculated by including ALL courses with the exception of E-prefixed or Pass/No Credit courses.

Major average is calculated by a select list of courses. Each major has a specific list of courses that make up major courses. A listing of courses included in the major average is available in B100. Major average courses are denoted by an "M" prefix on the unofficial academic transcript. Official academic transcripts that are ordered from the Registrar do not contain "M" prefixes.
