Summary
of the Research Activities Research in the production/manufacturing engineering area is conducted at both the systems level and at the machine level. Faculty investigates problems and implement solutions in production planning and control, performance modeling of production systems, manufacturing process validation, computer integrated manufacturing, automation, real-time machine control, and manufacturing processes such as laser micro-machining and layered manufacturing. In the quality/reliability engineering area, research is conducted on problems in on-line process control, off-line quality improvements, stochastic control, reliability optimization, component and systems reliability, accelerated life testing, software reliability, data acquisition and analysis, maintenance models and warranty estimation. In the system modeling and aviation research area, faculty investigates problems in air traffic separation standards, terminal area, aircraft inspection performance, software reliability, stochastic strategies of complex systems and performance modeling of client-server computer networks. Research is conducted by more than 40 students and 20 faculty, visitors and postdoctoral fellows. The research expenditures range from $500K to $1 M per year; the sponsors are NSF, FAA, DoD, DARPA, QRE Center (Quality and Reliability Engineering Center), Department of Transportation and industry participants.
