  • Dr. Özel gave a presentation on "Hard Turning with Variable Micro-Geometry PcBN Tools" at the CIRP General Assembly that will be held in Manchester, U.K., in August 26, 2008 The paper has appear in the Annals of the CIRP

  • Dr. Özel gave an invited lecture on "Surface Engineering for Medical Products: Friction, Coatings and Biocompatibility Issues", organized by Society of Manufacturing Engineers for the ISPE New Jersey Chapter Day, June 18, 2008, Somerset, New Jersey. 


  • Dr. Özel has presented a paper on micro-milling process planning for micro-mold manufacturing at the  3rd CIRP Int. Conference on High Speed Cutting, Dublin, Ireland, June 12-13, 2008.

  • Dr. Joaquim De Ciurana from University of Girona will be at MARL as visiting professor between April and August of 2008.

  • Dr. Özel  has been awarded a prestigious grant from the National Science Foundation. This research award of $186,039 will support a collaborative research project entitled "Improving Machinability of Titanium Alloys using Physics-based Simulation Modeling".

  • Our research paper entitled “Analytical and Thermal Modeling of High-Speed Machining with Chamfered Tools,” that appeared in ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, Vol. 130, Issue 1, February 2008 is ranked #1 in the the Top 10 Most Downloaded Articles  in the months Dec2007-Jan2008.

  • Dr. Özel has been invited to serve on the organizing committee of the 3rd International Conference on MicroManufacturing (ICOMM'08), that will be held in September 9-11, 2008 in Carnegie-Mellon University.

  • Dr. Özel has given a series of invited lectures on "Innovative Manufacturing Processes and Production Systems" in University of Girona, Catalonia, Spain in January 17-18, 2008. Dr. Özel also visited the newly established techno-park and advanced manufacturing laboratories of the GRIPP group directed by Dr. Joaquim De Ciurana in University of Girona and discussed collaboration between MARL@Rutgers and GRIPP@ Girona.

2007

  • Dr. Özel has received a research grant in the amount of $21,057 from United Technologies Research Center in November 2007. Total funding of this project has reached to $26,057 since May 2007.
  • Dr. Özel has given an invited seminar on "Experimental Nanomanufacturing" at William Paterson University, Wayne, New Jersey on November 13, 2007.
  • The inaugural issue of the International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems has been launched. See IJMMS leaflet.
  • Dr. Özel has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Nanomanufacturing in October 2007.
  • Our research team has presented three papers and Dr. Özel has chaired the session 4-1 on "Micro/Nano Machining" and " Session 14-2 on "Development and Applications of Micro Manufacturing Equipment" at the 2007 ASME Manufacturing Science & Engineering Conference (MSEC), October 15-17, 2007, Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Dr. Özel,  together with Dr. Andrew Trimmer of GE Global Research, NY, has organized a symposium on “Hybrid Macro/Meso/Micro Manufacturing Processes” sponsored by the 2007 ASME International Conference on Manufacturing Science & Engineering (MSEC) hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology on October 15-17, 2007 in Atlanta, GA.Please visit http://www.asmeconferences.org/MSEC07 for details.  
      
  • The symposium on “Hybrid Macro/Meso/Micro Manufacturing Processes” has been successfully conducted with three session an a total of 12 papers. The sessions are:
    • 4-1 Micro/Nano-Machining Papers on hybrid micro/nano machining processes such as micro-EDM, ultrasonic assisted micro-EDM, micro-EDG, micro-turning, micro-grinding and laser micro machining.
    • 4-2 Meso/Micro Manufacturing Processes Papers on meso/micro manufacturing processes including micro-scale laser shock peening, meso-scale pressure welding and micro-sensors for manufacturing processes.
    • 4-3 Analysis and Simulation of Machining Processes Papers on machining simulations, material constitutive modeling, residual stress modeling and force modeling for machining processes.
  • Dr. Özel  has been awarded with Associate Professor title by The Council of Higher Education of the Republic of Turkey on October 3, 2007.
  • Dr. Özel has presented a paper on "Modelling and Simulation of Micro-Milling Process," at the 4th International Conference and Exhibition on Design and Production of MACHINES and DIES/MOLDS, on 22 June 2007, Cesme, TURKEY. The paper was co-authored with A.Dhanorker and Xinyu Liu.
  • Yigit Karpat has defended his Ph.D. dissertation on May 14th, 2007. The dissertation is entitled "Predictive Modeling and Optimization in Hard Turning: Investigations of Effects on Cutting Tool Micro Geometry". He is now an assistant professor of Industrial Engineering at Bilkent University, Turkey.
  • Atul Dhanorker has defended his master thesis on April 23rd, 2007. His thesis is entitled "An experimental and modeling study on meso and micro scale end milling processes for micromanufacturing".
  • Dr. Özel has presented a paper on "Design and Analysis of Variable Micro-Geometry Tooling for Machining Using 3-D Process Simulations," at the International Conference on Smart Machining Systems, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Maryland on March 14, 2007. The paper was co-authored with Y. Karpat, J. Sockman and W. Shaffer.
  • Dr. Özel has given an invited presentation on "Advanced Machining Research at Rutgers" at the United Technologies Research Center, East Hartford, Connecticut on February 9, 2007.
  • Dr. Özel has been appointed as one of the two editors-in-chief of the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MECHATRONICS AND MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS.
      
  • Dr. Özel has given an invited presentation on "Modeling and Predicting Temperature Fields in Micro-Geometry CBN Tools: Towards Variable Edge  Micro-Geometry Tools", at CIRP Working Group on Temperature Measurements in Manufacturing Processes, Paris, France on January 24, 2007.

2006

2005 and earlier

  • We have presented our latest work as two papers at ASME IMECE'05 that was held in November 5-11, 2005 at Orlando, Florida. Dr. Ozel also co-chaired a session on "Surface Integrity and Product Performance of Meso/Micro/Nano-Scale Machining Hard/Brittle Materials".
  • Our article "Predictive modeling of surface roughness and tool wear in hard turning using regression and neural networks" is ranked #1 in Top 25 Hottest Articles in the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture by ScienceDirect.com (first half of 2005).
  • We presented two papers at NAMRC 33 that was held May 24-27, 2005 at Columbia University, NYC. Dr. Özel also chaired a session on "Machinability and Cutting Tools". 
  • Dr. Özel received the Best Paper Award in the 8th CIRP International Workshop on Modeling of Machining Operations. The award was presented at the 2005 CIRP International Workshop, that was held 10-11 May 2005 in Chemnitz, Germany. The paper was titled "Finite Element Method Simulation of Machining of AISI 1045 Steel with a Round Edge Cutting Tool". (pictures 1 and  2)
  • We presented a paper on high speed machining at ASME IMECE'04 that was held November 13-19, 2004 in Anaheim, California. Dr. Özel also co-chaired a session on "Mechanics and Tribology of High Speed Machining".
