Ask Boltman

Boltman (EGC's mascot) periodically reads and responds to content submitted through the EGC suggestion box. If you haven't offered a suggestion and have something on your mind, please visit the suggestion box and leave a comment.

Below are some of the questions and responses:

Q: "Hello EGC,

Earlier today I was in the mezzanine and could hear activity of what could only have been some sort of rodent in the air ducts. There shouldn't be rodents in our air supply, and if EGC could do anything to persuade the school to remedy this that would be great."

Boltman says: I've heard some other rumors backing this claim up, and we'll see if we can get anything done about it.

Q: "If you could please stop playing favorites with engineering disciplines and at least try and acknowledge all of them. Particularly packaging, which after being abandoned by it's original leader Stanley Dunn, has become one of the most neglected disciplines in all of engineering. Thanks EGC"

Boltman says: This is a very good point. Packaging sometimes seems to get the short end of the stick, and it definitely deserves more recognition.

Q: "less spam emails"

Boltman says: If I get one more spoofed email from myself my threads might become stripped. Something needs to be done about this. In the meantime, though, consider forwarding your email to another account such as Gmail. Then use its own spam filter to pare down your inbox automatically.

Q: "Can you do the catapault competition again"

Boltman says: Yes, we are planning on having this event again. It is always a great hit!

Q: "instead of swiping to get into dorms/buildings, have one of those readers where the id card only has to be nearby (thereby reducing the need to pull id out of wallet). princeton has some type of this sytem."

Boltman says: This would be nice. I'll see what we can do.

Q: "I live in Barr Hall and I was wondering if we would ever be able to use those first floor rooms that were originally designated as study rooms. To have these rooms, I believe, would be very useful, and at least in this building no one is currently living there, so it currently seems like a waste of space to be doing essentially nothing with the rooms."

Boltman says: I think that if no one is using the rooms then you are more than welcome to use them as study rooms.

Q: "Well, I would like the engineering website to be more organized and to have a better design and interface."

Boltman says: This may be an issue of budgeting resources, as it is expensive to redesign the site. Many people feel that it is organized pretty well, but I'm sure the engineering department is open to suggestions. So maybe the best way to get a change accomplished is to come up with some concrete ideas to implement and then inform us or the engineering department.

Q: "Residents of DBAMM should have access to the DBAMM dorms because we have friends from classes that live in other dorms. It sucks to have to get let in everytime you want to go see someone."

Boltman says: That would be very convenient. The issue is security, but maybe we can work something out.

Q: "I think that we need to get our cannon back from princeton"

Boltman says: Now this suggestion is very involved and would be very cool. However, I don't think that's something the EGC could condone.

Q: "The new funds raised by the different engineering societies and such should be allocated to engineering students' term bills."

Boltman says: Unfortunately, this does not help in the end. Student fees already go toward societies, so taking money away from the societies and giving it to the students is somewhat counterproductive. However, perhaps societies could create some events specifically for the purpose of raising money to lower term bills. Since the money allocated to societies is often not as much as they'd like already though, raising money for term bills might prove to be difficult.

Q: "Alumni log-in page which takes log-in details and puts them into a spreadsheet. Details can include: name, graduation year, major, current occupation, current email, current address, positions in EGC, donate to EGC, etc. This spreadsheet can then be used to keep track of where alumni are, what they're doing, and how to contact them. This will be useful for publicity of EGC as well as fundraising... along with other things like inviting speakers and alerting alumni of events.

Love,
Brian Spatocco"

Boltman says: We have been thinking about setting up an alumni page, and we hope to implement something similar to your description.

Q: "I'm not sure if this is in your jurisdiction, but the route that the B bus follows is really quite silly. It goes from Livingston, and, instead of driving straight onto Busch to the suites stop and so on, it gets on Rt 18 South, and takes the Busch campus exit. Then it proceeds to go to Werblin and whatnot. I think it makes a LOT more sense to go the opposite way around Busch. The last stop on campus is still the Campus Center, but it'll waste a lot less time backtracking.

Anyway, I don't know if this has anything to do with you, or if it is even possible to change it. I just noticed that it was pretty inefficient and thought I'd mention it."

Boltman says: We'll discuss the route and try to find out what the reason is for going the current direction.

Q: "The link on the main page announcement to the suggestions box doesn't work

and eit lab is too hot"

Boltman says: Yeah, it seems like a lot of the lecture halls can be pretty warm at times as well as some of the labs. We try to let the maintenance people know if something becomes overbearing, and we can let them know about the EIT lab. And the announcement link seems to work for me :).

Q: "Yo, can we got some weekend take out, yo? thanks y'all"

Boltman says: I would personally love that! But it might not be worth the cost due to low foot traffic to the dining halls on the weekends.

Q: "Staplers in the computer labs, please!"

Boltman says: Excellent idea! Don't you just hate it when you're printing something out last minute for class and can't staple it to hand it in? Well so do I.

Q: "I think we need to make sure we stick to Roberts Rule's so that meetings will run more smoothly and efficiently. Sometimes little debates arise when they shouldn't."

Boltman says: Good point. We'll try to speed up the meetings where we can.

Q: "I think an engineering newsletter/newspaper would be a good way to promote the EGC, and let the whole Rutgers School of Engineering be updated on what is going on."

Boltman says: That is an excellent idea! We are considering this, as it would be a great way to spread news in a manner other than email.

Q: "Better wifi internet in classrooms and dorms."

Boltman says: This is always a good suggestion, and hopefully we can get better access soon.
